Laser Micrometers

At LIMAB UK, we understand the vital role that in-process diameter and ovality measurement plays in manufacturing companies particularly if they are producing products such as wire, cable, medical tubes and various extruded products. The ability to accurately measure the diameter and shape of fast-moving products during the manufacturing process opens the possibility for manufacturers to automate process control which leads to big productivity and product quality gains.

The consequences of infrequent or poor diameter sample measurement can be costly for your business and could result in long production runs of out-of-specification products that will need to be scrapped. Furthermore, raw material usage can be reduced, saving costs by producing the product at the lower control diameter limit.

We have the expertise to assist you in choosing and implementing the right BETA LaserMike laser micrometer to suit your particular requirements. Should this be a single-axis, dual-axis or quad-axis laser micrometer model. Our laser diameter measurement systems will provide the next level of process control, helping you to improve plant efficiency and allowing you to take swift corrective actions leading to a better-quality end product and reassuring your customers.

BETA LaserMike’s founders introduces the world’s first ever laser scanning micrometer in 1972 and named it the LaserMike with this unique history and over 50 years of development you can be assured that you will getting the very best laser micrometer technology backed by decades of application knowledge.

A laser micrometer is a highly specialised instrument for non-contact diameter measurement used in a wide range of industries. Laser micrometers are known for their precision in determining the diameter and ovality of cylindrical parts. As laser micrometers use a non-contact measurement technique, they are suitable for measuring soft or moving parts and in-process measurements.

Typical in-process applications are the measurement of filaments, wires, cables, and extruded plastic tubes during manufacturing. There are also benchtop laser micrometers specifically designed for diameter measurement and ovality inspection of various precision components such as medical devices, precision machined shafts or spindles, rubber rollers and cutting tools.

laser-micrometerlaser-micrometer-working

A laser micrometer consists of a transmitter and a receiver. Inside the transmitter, a laser source is directed at a rotating mirror; an optical lens system collects the scanning light generated by the mirror and collimates the scan. This creates a parallel plane of laser light projected from the transmitter to the receiver.

When a round object is placed in the measurement region, a shadow is created that is the same size as the object. In the receiver, another lens collects the light and focuses it on a photodetector. This detector measures the time the laser light takes to sweep across the object being measured. Because the scanning time is directly proportional to the diameter of the component, the device can measure the diameter of an object with extremely high accuracy.

laser micrometer accuracy

Laser micrometers can measure the diameter of objects with extreme accuracy — at a resolution of 0.1 or even 0.01µm. The exact accuracy will depend on the laser micrometer model and the size of the object being measured. Generally speaking, accuracies of ±0.5 to 2µm are possible.

Laser micrometers measure the diameter of objects using a non-contact technique and are therefore suitable for measuring soft material that would be deformed using traditional contact measurement methods. This makes them ideal for measuring rubber rollers for printing machines or soft medical tubes, for example. Their rapid measurement rate also makes laser micrometers the recommended tools for in-process measurement on all types of production lines, such as wire drawing, cable manufacturing or extrusion lines.

The terms are interchangeable. Many people refer to laser micrometers as optical micrometers, as the underlying principle is optical. This also differentiates laser micrometers from other contact or non-optical methods of measuring diameter.
