Near Infrared On-line Coat-weight and Moisture Measurement Sensors for the Coating and Converting Industry
The IG710S and SR710S coat-weight and moisture measurement sensors are for on-line measurement of coatings, laminates and moisture. The sensors are specifically designed to meet the needs of the converting industry for measuring the coat-weight thickness and moisture. Using near-infrared (NIR) non-contact technology for on-line moisture measurement, it is suitable for many types of continuous processes and provides real-time moisture measurements that can be used to control processes, monitor product quality and warn operators if the process is moving out of specification, thereby increasing yield and improving quality. Using this on-line sensor improves process efficiency and results in substantial cost reductions and investment payback in a matter of months.
The IG710S and SR710S on-line coat-weight and moisture measurement sensors work on the principle that water and organic products, such as coatings, absorb NIR light at specific wavelengths. When exposed to NIR light, a product will absorb a proportion of this energy depending on the active constituent that is present. By pulsing light at a different known wavelength, the sensor compares the absorption rate to an internal reference, thus making it possible to determine exactly by how much each wavelength is being absorbed. Using high-speed signal processing, the algorithm converts the IR signals into an output that is proportional to moisture and coat-weight thickness by means of a calibration curve. The measurement is unaffected by changes in process conditions such as particle size, product height temperature, ambient lighting and humidity changes.
