NIR On-Line Pharmaceutical Moisture Gauge
The PH710e model is non-contact moisture gauge specifically designed to meet the needs of pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. Using near infrared (NIR) principle it is suitable monitoring the drying process. The gauge can either be used to make non-contacting measurements of the powder during the drying process by measuring through a sight glass or, in fiber-optic format, be used with the GEA Lighthouse™ probe. The combination of the PH710e with the automated GEA Lighthouse probe is a powerful viable in-process alternative to off-line LOD testing and complements the other real-time outputs used to run a granulation suite by providing:
– a robust real-time measurement of moisture
– improved drying process visualisation
– full CIP capability and wash-in-place during production
Achieving reliable on-line moisture measurement requires the fulfilment of two key criteria:

The PH710e works on the principle that moisture absorbs a specific wavelength of light. By pulsing light at a different known wavelength and comparing the absorption rate to an internal reference it is possible to determine exactly by how much each wavelength is being absorbed. Using high-speed signal processing the algorithm converts the infrared signals into an output that is proportional to moisture content by means calibration curve. The measurement in unaffected by changes in process conditions such as particle size, product height temperature, ambient lighting and humidity changes.
