The SlimTrak is a coat-weight and moisture measurement scanning system for measuring the thickness, coat-weight, basis weight and moisture on narrow web lines. Since these compact web lines often produce high value-added products, it is essential that they are accurately measured and controlled. SlimTrak provides a cost-effective solution for providing fast and accurate measurement to help manufacturers improve product quality and productivity. The system is both compact, robust and can easily be retrofitted to most lines even in confined process locations. The scanner can be equipped with either NDC’s IG710e backscatter or SR710e specular reflectance near infrared (NIR) sensors depending on the application or the web material properties. The operator interface displays the full cross-section web thickness profile and real-time thickness measurement.

Operating Principle

The SlimTrak is equipped with either an IG710e backscatter or SR710e specular reflectance NIR sensor. Both sensor types work on the principle that the material being measured absorb a specific wavelength of infrared (IR) light. By pulsing light at known wavelengths and comparing the absorption rate to an internal reference it is possible to determine exactly by how much each wavelength is being absorbed. Using high-speed signal processing, the algorithm converts the infrared signals into an output that is proportional to coat-weight, material thickness or moisture by means of a calibration algorithm. The measurement is unaffected by changes in process conditions such as temperature, ambient lighting and humidity changes.
